Shining Star, comprised of Dayton, Cincinnati and Evansville, Ind., players, went 12-3 in two tournaments that started July 24 at the ESPN Wide World of Sports complex.
Area members included Nathan Chambers (Miamisburg), Allen Jemison (Trotwood-Madison) and Joe Penno (Alter). Jemison has transferred from Alter and will be a senior at T-M this coming season.
The team is coached by Jim Walther. His daughter in-law, Amanda Walther, is an Ohio Lady Attack assistant to her father, Duane Williams.
Butler’s Eaton commits: According to Scout.com, Vandalia-Butler senior offensive guard Miles Eaton has verbally committed to Ball State. That gives the Aviators a pair of Division I recruits on the offensive line. Taylor Decker verbally committed to Notre Dame last spring.
Eaton and Decker should help make life easier for returning quarterback Ryne Pugh and running back Tyler Jones. Eaton is 6-feet-4, 297 pounds. Decker is 6-8, 275.
Vandalia opens the season at Greenville on Friday, Aug. 26.
Can’t beat that: There is no beating Belmont’s football team for home-field advantage. Incredibly, the Bison will play all 10 of their games at Welcome Stadium.
Belmont opens its season by hosting Cincinnati Hughes on Aug. 26. That’s also noteworthy because it’s the Bison’s only Friday contest. All of their other games are on Thursdays and Saturdays.
The City League has done away with Friday night doubleheaders. Instead, its format is back to one game on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays.
Welsh lands offer: Springboro two-way junior lineman Sean Welsh, 6-3, 255, received what likely is to be the first of many offers when Bowling Green State University extended an offer.
National placer: Chaminade Julienne senior Cierra Brown placed seventh in the triple jump (38 feet, 9 inches) and 100-meter hurdles (14.59) at last weekend’s USATF Jump Olympics track and field meet at Witchita, Kan.
Open season: All of the fall sports seasons began preseason practice on Monday. Boys and girls golf is the first sport to begin competition on Friday.
