Area fishing report

Grand Lake St. Marys: Crappie fishing has been hot. Anglers are shooting jigs under pontoons and docks, finding plenty of fish stacked up. Others are fishing close to the bottom in brush with a minnow under a bobber. Bluegills have been hitting waxworms and red worms and catfish are biting on cut shad and nightcrawlers.

Cowan Lake: The best place to fish for crappies has been over the ledges in front of the marina. Use minnows and fish at varying depths. Bass fishing has been good early and late, mostly with topwater and buzz baits. Try cat fishing at night with chubs, chicken liver and nightcrawlers.

Lake Loramie: Crappies are scattered, but biting on jigs and minnows. Work the brush along the banks with small jigs tipped with waxworms to catch bluegills and crappies. You might find larger fish in deeper water. Catfish are biting on all traditional stink baits,

C. J. Brown Reservoir: White bass have been hitting all over. Use minnows or flashy spoons and spinners. Work the rocks along the dam. A few walleyes have been caught off of the same rocks with large minnows. Fish over brush piles with minnows to catch crappies. Bluegills have been hitting red worms and waxworms around the marina.

Rocky Fork: Bass fishing continues to be good around laydowns and stumps, using crankbaits off of points and green/pumpkin worms along the banks on the south side of the lake. Fish in 5-9 feet of water. Crappies are 5-12 feet deep, hitting minnows and jigs. Bluegills are hitting waxworms and dry flies in the coves.

Paint Creek Lake: Plenty of crappies are being caught, but many are small. Look for wood and fish with minnows 4-12 feet deep. Bass have been hitting green/pumpkin worms along bluffs and points. Some saugeyes have been caught between the campground and the island on chartreuse twisters. White bass have been hitting inline spinners around the beach and the hazard zone.

Indian Lake: Excellent fishing has been reported for crappies and saugeyes. The best crappie fishing has been around Long Island, in the game reserve and under bridges. Use minnows and jigs and fish at varying depths. Saugeyes are hitting Vib-Es and large minnows around Lakeview Harbor and along channel banks. For bluegills, use rubber spiders, tipped with waxworms. Bass have been striking chatterbaits and buzzbaits.

Acton Lake: Plenty of crappies are being caught with about 40 percent keepers. Look for rocky banks and fish in 8 feet of water. Some fish will be suspended around 4 feet. Bluegills are being caught in the same spots on waxworms. Saugeyes have been caught on large minnows and sucker chubs fished along the bottom.

Caesar Creek Lake: Crappie and saugeye fishing should improve as the water temperature drops. The best crappie fishing has been with minnows about 11 feet deep. Saugeye fishing has been slow. Work the banks with spinnerbaits to catch largemouth bass. Bluegills are in the coves around stickups, hitting waxworms and red worms.

Lake Erie: Although walleye fishing has been slow, the best reports have come north of North Bass Island and along the Canadian border to Gull Island Shoal. As water temperatures drop walleyes should return to the island area from farther east.

Yellow perch fishing has been good with the best spots have been the Toledo lighthouse, three miles north of Little Cedar Point, west of West Sister Island, the green buoy off Catawba State Park, east of Middle Bass Island, off Kelleys Island airport reef, southeast of Kelleys Island Shoal, between Kelleys Island and Marblehead and the dumping grounds east of Marblehead.

Smallmouth bass are being caught around the Bass islands and Kelleys Island on tube jigs, crankbaits and jerkbaits.
