Area fishing report

C.J. Brown Reservoir: Fish around the sunken trees to catch crappies or bluegills. Crappies are biting on minnows and bluegills have been hitting red worms and waxworms. Crappies are also biting around the marina, but most are small. Walleye fishing has been good in the deep holes off of the beach and around the island near the dam. Jigging Vib-E's has been the best method, although a few have been caught on crawler harnesses and Erie Dearies tipped with a night crawler. Catfish are biting all over on chicken liver and night crawlers. There will be a kids fishing tournament at C.J. on May 4 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sign up at Boathouse Bait, near the dam.

Paint Creek Lake: Crappies are being caught in 4-7 feet of water around laydowns. Plum Run has been the best spot. Crappies are hitting minnows and mini-twisters.

Rocky Fork Lake: Bass fishing continues to be good around points. Use shad-colored jigs or June bug worms. White bass are hitting inline spinners in the creeks. The best areas for crappies have been on the south side and toward the west end in 3-10 feet of water. Fish around brush and wood with minnows or jigs. Bluegills are hitting waxworms in the coves and around docks. A few saugeyes have been caught by trolling around the south beach or the island. Chartreuse twisters tipped with pieces of night crawler have been the best baits.

Acton Lake: Crappie fishing has been hot. Look for brush close to the bank and fish 1-1.5 feet deep with minnows or jigs. Waxworms are good for catching bluegills in brushy areas. Bass are hitting spinners, crankbaits and natural color plastic worms along the banks and around points.

Rush Run: Work the brush for bluegills and crappies. A jigs tipped with a waxworm has been a good bait. A few trout remain. They bite on small spinners, waxworms or corn. Bass are going after jigs and plastics.

Clark Lake: Good crappie fishing continues. Use minnows and fish around brush in shallow water. Bluegills are around structure, hitting waxworms or redworms.

Bluegills have been hitting around docks on red worms and waxworms. Catfish are biting all over the lake. The larger fish are going after cut shad and the smaller cats are hitting night crawlers or minnows.

Indian Lake: Muddy conditions have limited fishing. Saugeyes have been caught off of the humps near Lakeview Harbor, off of the sough bank and off of Paradise Point. Cowan Lake: Not many anglers have been on the lake this past week, due mostly to the weather. The best crappie spots are on the north side. Use minnows and fish around drop-offs, Bluegills are hitting waxworms in brushy areas. A few saugeyes have been picked up by trolling with chartreuse twisters. Bass fishing has been slow.

Lake Erie: Walleye fishing had been good until high winds over the weekend greatly reduced water clarity in most of the western basin. Trollers have caught walleyes around the outer cans of the Camp Perry firing range, between Green and Rattlesnake Islands, west of Catawba, and to a lesser extent, around Kelleys Island. Rapala deep husky jerks and deep diving Reef Runners have been the most consistent crankbaits. Walleyes have been caught by jigging nearshore west of the reefs and on Locust, Cone and Niagara reefs within the Camp Perry firing range. Purple or green hair jigs have been the lure of choice for jiggers.
