MARK ASHMAN ‘00–Basketball–1996-2000
Dayton’s best back-to-the-basket scorer since Henry Finkel, Mark Ashman never missed a start in his college career. The big man from St. Marys, Ohio started 119 games from 1996 to 2000, setting a Flyer record that stood until 2010. His career total of 1,449 points is 20th in UD history. He had season averages of 8.6, 11.7 15.2 and 13.1 points in his four seasons wearing the Red and Blue, and averaged 12.2 points in his career. Ashman was a two-time White-Allen MVP award winner, earning the honor outright as a junior and sharing the award with Tony Stanley in 2000. Ashman also won the Sharpenter Rebounding Award as a junior and senior and led the team in blocked shots three straight years. He is fifth in career blocked shots at UD (96). Part of Oliver Purnell’s first recruiting class at Dayton, he ended his career by helping lead Dayton back to the NCAA tournament after a 10-year drought. The Flyers were 22-9 in 1999-2000, and won the Atlantic 10 West Division championship. Ashman was named First Team All-Atlantic 10 as a senior. He is currently the head men’s basketball coach for Wright State University’s Lake Campus in Celina, Ohio. In an odd coincidence, this is the second consecutive year a graduate of St. Marys Memorial High School has been inducted into the UD Athletic Hall of Fame. Damon Goodwin was inducted in the Hall of Fame Class of 2010.
JERMAINE BAILEY ’03—Football—1998-2001
A late bloomer who started just one game while at Cincinnati Moeller High School, tailback Jermaine Bailey had an All-American career at the University of Dayton. After limited duty as a freshman and sophomore, Bailey burst on the scene as a junior, gaining 1,373 yards with 13 TD’s. He was also UD’s leading receiver with 18 catches for 252 yards. Bailey was named First Team Football Gazette Mid-Major All-America as the Flyers finished 8-3 and tied for first in the Pioneer Football League in 2000. The emergence of quarterback Kelly Spiker allowed UD to go to a more balanced attack in 2001, so Bailey’s numbers diminished to 887 yards rushing and 13 receptions, but he was named PFL Offensive Player of the Year. He gained 109 yards in the PFL championship game, and scored a TD on his final career carry in the championship game victory vs. Jacksonville. He was First Team All-PFL in 2000 and 2001. Bailey is fifth in career rushing at UD (2,299 yards) and had 13 games of 100 yards or more in his career, a UD record. He also holds the UD single-game rushing record (251 yards vs. Drake, 10/21/00). He was a member of three PFL championship teams, which went a combined 30-12. Bailey was team MVP and co-captain as a senior. Bailey lives in Xenia, Ohio, and teaches in the Centerville City Schools. He is an assistant football coach for the Elks.
MEGAN McKNIGHT MAHLE ’02—Soccer—1998-2001
The heart and soul of the first two Dayton women’s soccer teams to reach the NCAA tournament, Megan McKnight Mahle scored arguably the two most important goals in program history. She had the goal that sent the Flyers to their first NCAA tournament by scoring with five seconds left to beat Xavier 1-0 in the 1999 Atlantic 10 championship game, and In 2001 NCAA tournament, sent Dayton to Sweet Sixteen by scoring the first goal unassisted and assisting on second in 2-0 win over Miami (Ohio). A midfielder who holds the UD single-season record for assists (13), she was an honorable Mention All-American as a senior co-captain in 2001. One of the most clutch players in Flyer women’s soccer history, Mahle is tied as UD’s second-best career scorer in A-10 tournament play (10 points) , and is also tied for second in NCAA tournament play (five points). She played on teams that were a combined 65-21-2 overall, and 39-3-1 in A-10 action. The Hamilton Badin graduate never missed a start in her four-year career. Megan married former UD football player B.J. Mahle, and they reside in Louisville, Ky.
ERIN TREADWAY HAZELBAKER ‘04—Volleyball—2001-03
One of the most complete student-athletes in the history of the University of Dayton, Erin Treadway Hazelbaker was a trailblazer on and off the court. She earned the trifecta of Atlantic 10 Player of the Year, A-10 Tournament Most Outstanding Performer and A-10 Student-Athlete of the Year in volleyball as a senior in 2003. Treadway is the only A-10 student-athlete to take all three honors in any sport. In addition, she was the first UD player to win A-10 Player of the Year in any sport, and the first of five UD volleyball players to be named tournament MVP. A graduate of Chaminade-Julienne High School in Dayton, she was the top player on the first UD team to play in the NCAA tournament and also the first to receive votes in the final AVCA national poll. That 2003 team finished 26-10 and advanced to the NCAA Second Round with an upset win of Michigan State in East Lansing. Treadway was two-time First Team All-Atlantic 10, A-10 All-Tournament Team and ACVA All-Region. She was an AVCA Honorable Mention All-American as a senior. She finished her career third and is currently eighth in career kills (1,233) at UD, and her 542 kills in 2003 are the fourth-best single-season mark at UD. She played three seasons at Dayton after transferring from Ohio State. After graduation, she earned NCAA and Atlantic 10 Post-Graduate Scholarships. She now lives in Hebron, Ky.
