On Tuesday against the Kansas City Royals, with the Reds leading 1-0 in the ninth, Chapman gave up a solo home run to Ben Zobrist.
The Reds lost 3-1 in 13 innings. Reliever Ryan Mattheus fielded a bunt by Kris Medlen and threw the ball into right field. Jarrod Dyson scored from first on the play. Two straight singles against Mattheus brought in the second run of the inning.
Chapman’s blown save cost Reds rookie Raisel Iglesias a victory. He threw seven shutout innings, allowing three hits, walking one and striking out three.
Eugenio Suarez got the Reds on the board with a solo home run in the first inning. It was his eighth home run of the season. The Reds failed to score in the next 12 innings and got only four more hits.
Lorenzen update: Michael Lorenzen threw a complete-game shutout Sunday for Triple-A Louisville in his first start since being demoted to the minor leagues. In his last five starts with the Reds since the All-Star break, Lorenzen was 0-4 with a 12.57 ERA.
“I think he gets it. He’s a smart kid,” Reds manager Bryan Price said. “It’s hard to be 23 years old and be pouting about not being in the big league rotation, especially when he had been struggling. He was accountable for his performance. He understood he needed to get down to Triple-A to get back on top of his game. That’s the most important thing. You have to deserve to be in the big leagues.”
The Reds called up John Lamb, who they acquired from the Royals in the trade for Johnny Cueto, to take Lorenzen’s spot.
Lamb allowed five earned runs in six innings against the Dodgers on Friday in his big league debut. He’s scheduled to make his Great American Ball Park debut Thursday against the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Perez weekend: The Reds will honor Baseball Hall of Famer Tony Perez on Friday and Saturday.
There will be a postgame ceremony Friday after a 7:10 p.m. game against the Diamondbacks. Joining Perez on the field will be former teammates Johnny Bench, Joe Morgan, Pete Rose, Dave Concepcion, George Foster, Cesar Geronimo, Ken Griffey, Sr., Jack Billingham, Don Gullett, Rawly Eastwick, Pat Darcy and Doug Flynn.
A statue honoring Perez will be unveiled at 4:30 p.m. Saturday on Crosley Terrace in front of Great American Ball Park. Tom Tsuchiya created the statue. He also created the statues of Ted Kluszewski, Ernie Lombardi, Frank Robinson, Joe Nuxhall, Johnny Bench and Joe Morgan outside the stadium.
The first 30,000 fans at the 7:10 p.m. game Saturday receive a replica Perez statue. Perez will be honored in a pregame ceremony and throw out the first pitch.
