Bengals announce new defensive coordinator, new wide receivers coach

The Cincinnati Bengals have added two assistants to Marvin Lewis’ staff with the hiring of defensive coordinator Teryl Austin and wide receivers coach Bob Bicknell.

Austin was the defensive coodinator in Detroit the last four seasons.

“I am excited to add Teryl to our coaching staff as defensive coordinator,” said head coach Marvin Lewis in a release. “He is a bright and aggressive coach with a wealth of experience. I look forward to working alongside him to take full advantage of our talented defensive personnel.”

Austin will replace Paul Guenther, who left after four seasons as Bengals defensive coordinator to take the same job in Oakland with new head coach Jon Gruden.

“It’s an honor to join the Bengals organization,” Austin said. “I look forward to leading an aggressive group of young men and helping them and the team achieve our goals.”

The 52-year-old Austin has had numerous interviews for head coach jobs the last two seasons, including with the Lions last week.

The Lions were 27th in total defense this season. They were 15th in 2016 when they made the playoffs. In his first season as Detroit defensive coordinator, the Lions finished second in run defense.

Prior to Detroit, Austin was the defensive backs coach for the Baltimore Ravens from 2011-13. He also was a secondary coach in Arizona (2007-09) and Seattle (2003-2006), and he was the defensive coordinator at the University of Florida in 2010.

Bicknell has 10 years of experience as NFL coach at Kansas City (2007-09), Buffalo (2010-12), Philadelphia (2013-15) and San Francisco (2016).

He was the wide receivers coach at Baylor in 2017.

Bicknell replaces James Urban, whom the Baltimore Ravens hired as quarterebacks coach last week.
