Turner explodes for 32 points, Northwest boys edge Badin

The two winningest coaches in Badin High School boys basketball history squared off Wednesday night, with the Nick Argentati-led Northwest Knights claiming this round.

Ronnell Turner put on a show, coming off the bench to pour in 32 points as the visiting Knights beat the Ram 67-64 before a packed house at Mulcahey Gym.

Gerry Weisgerber, in his second stint leading Badin, has amassed 275 wins in his 19 years. Argentati is a distant second on the wins list, posting 87 in eight years.

“No doubt, it is always nice to get a win, but really nice to come here and get one,” Argentati said. “We don’t often get 67 points, but we made shots tonight. Our offense was good.”

Justin Pappas had 17 points, John Marot 15 and Daunte DeCello 10 as Badin (3-4) had a two-game winning streak snapped.

“Well, we played a good fourth quarter,” Weisgerber said. “We wanted to get the ball inside, and once we did that, we were successful. Our game plan was play inside out, but we needed to keep doing it. “

The Rams trailed 29-26 after a competitive first half, but they were hurt when Pappas went to the bench early in the third quarter.

With Pappas sidelined, Northwest extended a 29-28 lead to 44-35.

The Knights led by seven after three periods and held on despite hitting only 9 of 17 free throws in the final quarter.

Despite the poor free-throw shooting, Northwest was able to lean on Turner, who hit 3-pointers and free throws and got to the rim whenever he wanted.

“(Turner) is so athletic, and he is a good passer,” Argentati said. “He is really hard to guard when we spread it out. We struggled late not getting stops, which got them back in it.”

Badin trailed 56-43 in the fourth before rallying to cut the lead to 61-58 with 2:13 left.

The Rams kept it at three and got a steal with 10 seconds left, but a good 3-point look at the basket was off.

“We learned from the wins over St. X and Bellbrook and we will learn from this loss,” Weisgerber said. “Tonight they hurt us with the drive, but we will adjust. When we see it again we will be better.”

Pappas grabbed nine rebounds and Seth Thompson added eight for Badin. Kaleb Williams contributed 13 points and eight boards for the Knights, and Jacob Collins chipped in eight points and six assists.

Northwest (5-3) hosts Ross on Friday. The Rams will be at home against Harrison on Tuesday.
