Also figuring in Centerville’s scoring were seniors Cooper Jones (78) and Adam Velasco (80). Individuals also qualifying for state were sophomores Lucas Wells of Springfield and Jack Wertz of Elder (73) and senior Zach Crawford of Vandalia-Butler (75).
It’s the second straight season for Centerville to advance to state. Last year the Elks were fifth.
Springboro had a streak of three straight state-qualifying teams snapped. Panthers senior Josh Gilkison, a district runner-up last season, tied for 10th (77) and failed to advance as an individual.
The D-I boys state will be at Ohio State University’s Scarlet Course and the D-I girls at the OSU Gray Course.
• Marissa Wenzler was runner-up with a 76 in leading Centerville to the D-I girls district title on Monday at Glenview Golf Course in Cincinnati. The Elks had a team total of 334 and were joined by Ursuline Academy (343) and McAuley (346) in qualifying for next week’s D-I state tournament at Columbus.
Also figuring in Centerville’s scoring were Megan Munn (82), Kayla Ramsey (86) and Amanda Hayes (90). Hannah McCrabb (82) tied for eighth overall in leading Springboro to seventh as a team.
Centerville was the first-day leader at state last season but was overcome by multiple state champ Dublin Jerome and finished tied for second with Green.
• Record-setter Connor Quigley will again lead Oakwood into the D-II boys state tournament at OSU’s Scarlet Course this weekend. At state last year Quigley fired a record-setting 67 on the second day and tied Bexley’s Cameron Karmia for medalist honors with a 5-under 143. Bexley won its 10th state title and Oakwood was fourth.
It’s the fourth season for Quigley to figure in Oakwood’s scoring. He’ll be joined at state by seniors Payton Wheat, Danny Johnsen, Charlie Mullen and Mark Lauterbach. The Lumberjacks are perennial state contenders and won D-II state team titles in 2009-10 and 2012-13. Also advancing as an individual was Valley View’s Ben Herman.
The only area player to make the D-III boys state cut at NorthStar Golf Club in Sunbury was Brad Gottemoeller of Fort Loramie. The senior shot 72 to place runner-up in last week’s district also at Beavercreek.
• Versailles and Greater Catholic League Co-Ed North Division rivals Carroll and Chaminade Julienne all qualified as teams in the D-II girls state tourney at OSU’s Gray Course this weekend. Senior Lauren Heitkamp (86) led Versailles to the district team title last week at PipeStone Golf Course in Miamisburg. Carroll and CJ tied for second.
Eaton junior Sarah Willis (74) won the district. National Trail freshman Makenna Jones (77) beat Monroe senior Sammi Blackburn in a playoff for second. All three advanced to state.
The two-day boys Divisions II and III and girls D-II state tournaments will be 18 holes today and Saturday.
