Flyers fall short in A-10 title game, await selection show

Dayton’s quest to win its first Atlantic 10 tournament title since 2003 ended with a 71-65 loss to Virginia Commonwealth in the championship game Sunday at the Barclays Center.

The Flyers trailed 33-26 at halftime and fell behind by 11 early in the second half. They trailed throughout the second half and never led but tied it three times in the final minutes. Each time the Rams, who had lost in the championship game the last two years, scored to go ahead again.

The turning point came with 58 seconds left when Scoochie Smith turned it over, and VCU went the other way for a fast-break layup to go up four. The Flyers played catch up from there and ran out of time as the Rams hit their free throws.

Dayton played well in almost every facet, but they struggled from 3-point range for the second straight day. They made 2 of 13 Saturday and 2 of 12 Sunday.

Smith led the Flyers with 16 points. Jordan Sibert and Dyshawn Pierre each had 13. Kendall Pollard scored 13.

Dayton (25-8) will watch the NCAA selection show at 6 p.m. at Burke’s Restaurant and Bar in Yonkers, N.Y. They will stop on the way to the airport in White Plains, N.Y.
