Norfolk State transfer Rashid Gaston visits Dayton

The Dayton men’s basketball team hosted one potential transfer Thursday and awaited word on a decision from another who already visited campus.

Rashid Gaston, a 6-foot-8 forward from Norfolk State, visited UD on Thursday, according to a source. He is also considering Xavier and will visit there next week, according to a report by ESPN’s Jeff Goodman.

Josh Cunningham, a 6-7 forward from Bradley who visited Dayton in May, could decide in the next one to four days between Dayton and Illinois.

Gaston, of Warren G. Harding High School in Warren, Ohio, averaged 15.5 points and 9.6 rebounds as a junior. He will have to sit out the 2015-16 season and has one year of eligibility remaining.

Gaston surprised Norfolk State coach Robert Jones with his decision to transfer May 25. According to a story in the Virginian-Pilot, Gaston wanted to play his final season at a higher-profile school so he could increase his chances of playing professional basketball.

Cunningham, who was a teammate of Dayton junior guard Kyle Davis at Morgan Park High School in Chicago, averaged 7.9 points and 7.5 rebounds as a freshman for Bradley last season. He decided to transfer after a coaching change at Bradley.

Cunningham will also have to sit out the upcoming season. He has three years of eligibility remaining.
