Buckeyes lose Corey Smith for season; Cam Burrows also hurt

Ohio State’s wide receiver corps took another hit Saturday when Corey Smith broke his leg in the second half against Indiana. He got tangled up in a play along the sideline. A defender rolled into the leg from behind.

Smith, a fifth-year senior from Akron who played his first two seasons at a junior college, won’t play again this season but might be eligible for a sixth season, coach Urban Meyer said Monday.

“He’s one of my favorite players, a guy that’s been through a lot in his life, certainly a lot here,” Meyer said. “My heart bleeds for that guy, and so does the rest of our team’s.”

Burrows update: Safety Cam Burrows, a Trotwood-Madison graduate, did not travel with the Buckeyes to Bloomington because of a foot injury. Defensive coordinator Luke Fickell said Monday he doesn't know if Burrows will need surgery.

“It’s not definite just yet,” Fickell said. “I think we’ll probably know something by the end of this week.”

The absence of Burrows hurts Ohio State’s depth in the secondary. Damon Webb remains indefinitely suspended.

“It makes us go back to the drawing board in trying to substitute and trying to get your best 11 guys on the field,” Fickell said.

More injuries: Meyer expects to get wide receiver Paris Campbell back this week. He missed the last two games with a knee injury.

Wide receiver Curtis Samuel did not play much Saturday because he did not practice last week. He suffered from back spasms. He’s feeling better this week.

Elliott honored: Ezekiel Elliott won the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week award Monday after rushing for a career-high 274 yards against Indiana on Saturday.

Elliott leads the Big Ten and ranks sixth in the nation with 145.8 yards per game. He has gained at least 100 yards 10 games in a row, averaging 165.3 yards during that stretch.

Top performances: Defensive end Tyquan Lewis and defensive tackle Adolphus Washington shared Ohio State's defensive player of the game award. Elliott won the offensive honor. Joe Burger was named special teams player of the game.

Earning champion grades were Michael Thomas, Braxton Miller, Smith, Dontre Wilson, Pat Elflein and Billy Price on offense and Joey Bosa, Tommy Schutt, Vonn Bell, Gareon Conley, Joshua Perry, Raekwon McMillan and Darron Lee on defense.
