Fans at Ohio State’s hotel keep Buckeyes up late

A small segment of Ohio State’s fan base did the Buckeyes no favors the night before the national championship game against Oregon.

Those fans staying at — or at least partying at — the team hotel in Dallas, the Hilton Anatole, made enough noise late Sunday evening to disrupt defensive lineman Joey Bosa’s sleep patterns.

“You fans in the lobby are really making it hard to sleep,” Bosa wrote on Twitter.

Then he wrote, “Right as I tweet that they start singing (Carmen Ohio).”

Earlier in the day, coach Urban Meyer pleaded with Ohio State fans to keep quiet.

“Fans in the team hotel, help your Buckeyes out,” Meyer wrote on Twitter. “Please respect the 10 p.m. noise curfew in the atrium tonight. Go Bucks!”

Deadline looms: Underclassmen have until Thursday to decide on whether to declare themselves eligible for the NFL draft.

Meyer would like that deadline pushed back in future years because it falls just three days after the national championship game. He’s not worried about it this year because two Ohio State juniors with draft prospects, Adolphus Washington and Taylor Decker, have told Meyer they will return for their senior years.

“Last year, we had two guys,” Meyer said. “One year at Florida, we had 12 players send out their paperwork. … I’ve been involved in those conversations. You see many underclassmen not get drafted and their careers just ripped apart. It’s not right, but it’s not an attack on anyone because everyone is trying to do the right thing.”

Turf news: Ohio State and Oregon played Monday on different turf than that used by the Dallas Cowboys. According to a story in the Dallas Morning News, 43 pieces of turf, weighing 175 tons in all, are stored at AT&T Stadium for college football games.

Stadium officials told the newspaper each team can take the painted pieces of turf in the end zones home with them after the game.

No distractions: Ohio State quarterback Cardale Jones blocked almost every contact in his phone in the days leading up to the game.

“It took me about 40 minutes to block everyone on my phone,” Jones said Saturday. “The only ones who can still call me are the coaches and my mom. I wanted to eliminate as many distractions as possible. I haven’t had (a problem), but I just wanted to put that much more into my preparation.”

Kimmel contest: Late night talk show host Jimmy Kimmel arrived in Dallas on Sunday to push his Lord of the Poster Board Challenge. He encouraged fans to create clever signs and post photos of them to Twitter with the hashtag LOTPB.

Today's schedule: The winning coach and MVP of the game will hold a press conference at 10 a.m. today at the Renaissance Dallas Hotel.

Looking ahead: The Buckeyes open the 2015 season Sept. 7 against Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Va. They host Hawaii in their home opener Sept. 12.
