Jets draft Ohio State wide receiver Smith in second round

Ohio State wide receiver Devin Smith’s long wait at the NFL draft ended Friday, and he told ESPN on the stage in New York City, “It was worth it.”

The New York Jets selected Smith, of Massillon, with the fifth pick of the second round. He was the 37th pick overall and the first Buckeye taken in the 2015 draft.

On Twitter, Smith wrote, “J-E-T-S JETS JETS JETS BABY!!!”

Smith was one of the few players to attend the draft in person not to get taken in the first round Thursday.

“When I heard it was the Jets, I was very excited,” Smith told NewYorkJets.com. “It’s a whole new chapter in my life and I’m looking forward to bringing whatever I can to this team.

“Oh man, I’m looking forward to teaming up with Brandon Marshall and Eric Decker and coming in and learning as much as I can and just grasping everything I can. All the information they’re going to give me, I’m going to take it and try to add it to my game and become the best player I can be.”

As a senior last season, Smith led the Buckeyes with 931 receiving yards, 12 touchdowns and 28.1 yards per catch. He ranked third on the team with 33 receptions.

Smith finished his career with 30 touchdown catches, ranking second in Ohio State history. The Buckeyes were 22-0 when he caught a touchdown pass. He also ranks 11th with 121 receptions and fifth with 2,503 receiving yards.

Miami's Rollins drafted: The Green Bay Packers drafted Miami University cornerback Quinten Rollins with the 30th pick of the second round and 62nd overall pick.

A Wilmington High School graduate, Rollins played four years of basketball at Miami and decided to play football because he had one semester of eligibility remaining. He intercepted seven passes last fall and was named the Mid-American Conference Defensive Player of the Year.

Hicks drafted: Lakota West graduate Jordan Hicks was drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles with the 20th pick of the third round. Hicks was a second-team All-Big 12 selection at linebacker in 2014 for Texas.

Bennett update: Centerville High School graduate Michael Bennett's wait continued deep into the third round. The Ohio State defensive lineman, projected to be a second or third-round pick, was not taken in the first 26 picks of the third round.
