Dayton AD expected some bumps for Flyers

Tim Wabler, the University of Dayton athletic director, made the trip to Old Dominion and said he hasn’t been surprised by the Flyers’ up-and-down season so far.

“It’s very, very early, and I think the coaching staff knew it’d be a process with a number of new student-athletes in the program and others taking on different roles,” he said.

“I think everybody knew it’d be a process, and the schedule was set up that way.”

He means the Flyers were able to build up to their tougher games, unlike last season when they took on three top-20 teams in the Puerto Rico Tip-off Classic.

But they launched perhaps the most challenging part of their schedule at ODU. They have five more dicey non-league games before starting in the Atlantic 10 by playing three of their first four games on the road, including a trip to Xavier.

“Losing seven seniors and certainly the number of minutes you lost, it just makes sense to schedule the way we scheduled. ... It’s not necessarily when you play (top) teams, but WHETHER you play those teams,” Wabler said.

Even though the Flyers suffered a 74-71 defeat to ODU, they look more ready than ever for the punishing stretch ahead.
