“It was really hard,” Fillion said. “I was really well surrounded. My roommates were the best roommates you could ever ask for. They helped me out. They probably taught me the most English out of anyone else.”
Fillion didn’t have to worry about communicating on the field that year because she missed the whole season with the injury and redshirted. That’s why she’s still a Raider in 2013.
Through eight games, in her second senior season, Fillion leads the Raiders with four goals and is tied for the lead in the Horizon League. She’s well on her way to passing her season total of last season when she tied Ini Umotong for the team lead with seven goals.
“I’m way more confident (this year),” Fillion said. “It feels good.”
Fillion had an assist Wednesday in a 4-3 loss to Butler at Alumni Field. Ini Umotong scored twice as the Raiders rallied from a 3-1 deficit to tie the game, only to see Butler regain the lead 39 seconds after the tying goal.
Fillion scored Wright State’s second goal against Dayton on Sunday at Alumni Field at the 76:51 mark. Dayton scored six minutes later, and the teams tied 2-2.
The Raiders (2-3-3) play at West Virginia on Sunday and play their first Horizon League game at home against Youngstown State on Sept. 28.
“I think our schedule was made really hard for us, so we can get prepared for conference,” Fillion said. “I think we’ve been doing pretty good. When we lose, it’s been so close every single time. I think it shows character for our team coming back and staying in the game.”
Fillion had to show character in overcoming the knee injury as a freshman. She did all her rehabilitation at Wright State.
“At first, it was really hard,” she said, “because you don’t know if you’re ever going to go back to the way you were before and playing the same way. I think it helped me grow as an individual, and it helped my playing afterward. It’s probably one of the most important reasons I decided to stay: the support and help from everyone. No rush. No stress. It was awesome.”
Men's basketball: The Wright State men's basketball games are moving to a new radio station. The games will be broadcast on WDSJ "Big" 106.5 FM. The games were on WBZI 100.3 FM the last two seasons.
The switch expands the area in which Wright State fans can hear the broadcasts. WBZI is a 500-watt station. WDSJ is a 50,000-watt station.
Volleyball: The Raiders beat Chicago State 3-0 Wednesday on the road, improving to 6-8 with their third win in the last four matches.
Men's soccer: Junior goalkeeper Craig Feehan made three saves as Wright State (1-2-1) tied Ohio State 0-0 on Tuesday in Columbus. The Raiders host Northern Kentucky at 8 tonight.
