Davis still soaring for D-III Heidelberg

At this rate, Heidelberg junior basketball player Nate Davis (Stivers) will have his own wing on YouTube before he's finished.

Davis, who earlier this season got some love from ESPN for a spectacular two-handed slam, had three more noteworthy dunks in a 72-63 win against Otterbein on Wednesday that snapped a six-game losing streak and kept the Student Princes (7-17, 5-12 OAC) in contention for the Ohio Athletic Conference tournament.

The highlight of Davis’s latest dunking exhibition was a thunderous one-handed put-back that brought the crowd to its feet. Also available for viewing on the video-sharing website are a two-hander and an alley-oop. Davis finished with 17 points and 10 rebounds, his sixth double-double.

According to the Heidelberg sports information department, the 6-foot-5 Davis, who averages 11.6 points and 8.8 rebounds, has dunked at least once in at least five games this season.

Heidelberg, a Division III school in Tiffin, must win Saturday against Mount Union to have any chance of qualifying for the conference tournament.

• Aaron Pogue (Dunbar), Cleveland State's 6-foot-9, 250-pound senior center, has been a major disappointment this season, partly due to knee and thigh injuries but also due to his inability to stay out of foul trouble. Averaging 6.0 points and 4.2 rebounds, Pogue has 15 points (3-for-13 shooting), 15 rebounds and 15 fouls in CSU's last four games, including consecutive Horizon League losses to Valparaiso, Butler and Milwaukee.

Harvard's women's basketball team lost a first-place Ivy League showdown to Princeton 84-56 last Saturday, but it wasn't because Brogan Berry (Carroll) didn't come to play. The Crimson point guard scored 21 points and had three assists with no turnovers in 35 minutes. Players other than Berry shot 12-for-52.

At the Senior Bowl last month, Florida State offensive tackle Zebrie Sanders (Northmont) was measured and found to stand 6-foot-5½ with an 83½-inch wingspan. If that's true, it means his wingspan grew a quarter inch from his junior pro day last year and that he got shorter after being assessed at 6-5¾. Former NFL defensive end Jevon Kearse had an 86-inch wingspan and was known as "The Freak." Scouts like wingspans of at least 80 in offensive tackle prospects, so Sanders — who is sneaking into the first round in some mock drafts — should be all right.

• Junior Katie Pleiman (Chaminade Julienne), the Xavier tennis team's No. 1 singles player, went 4-0 last weekend. She had easy singles wins against Cleveland State and Youngstown State and teamed with Kally Alkire for two in doubles.

Brittany Duncan (Fairborn), a freshman softball player at Valparaiso, was named Horizon League player of the week for the period ending Feb. 12. In her first four college games, including victories against Nebraska-Omaha, Iowa State and Drake, the elementary education major went 6-for-14 (.429) with a home run, six RBIs and a .714 slugging percentage. Her homer was a three-run blast against Iowa State.
