Tom Archdeacon wins U.S. Basketball Writers awards

Dayton Daily News sports columnist Tom Archdeacon and John Feinstein of the Washington Post were the only two to claim first-and second-place finishes in the U.S. Basketball Writers Association’s best-writing contest.

Archdeacon's story about UD Hall of Famer Bucky Bockhorn and the brothers he lost in World War II and the Korean War — won first place in moderate length features.

His column about former Brookville High and Wright State hoops star Courtney Boyd and her successful quest to save her younger sister from heroin addiction — won second place for column writing.

Feinstein took first for enterprise reporting and was second in spot news. Sports Illustrated’s Luke Winn won spot news and finished third in magazine-length features.
