Dayton Flyers offer scholarship to top-100 prospect in 2022 class

Jaden Schutt, a top-100 prospect in the class of 2022, announced Wednesday he received a scholarship offer from the Dayton Flyers.

Schutt, a 6-foot-5 guard, is entering his junior year at Yorkville Christian High School in Yorkville, Ill. That’s 52 miles southwest of Chicago.

Schutt ranks 86th in the 2022 class, according to He averaged 22.9 points, 9.1 rebounds, and 2.9 assists per game as a sophomore.

Schutt has received offers from Ohio State, Wisconsin and Michigan State, among others, this summer.

Dayton has one scholarship open for the 2020-21 season and will see four more open after the season when Jalen Crutcher, Ibi Watson, Jordy Tshimanga and Rodney Chatman exhaust their eligibility.

The number of scholarships open in 2022 depends on how many spots Dayton fills in 2021. Two scholarships open after the 2021-22 season when Dwayne Cohill and Chase Johnson will be seniors.

It’s still relatively early in the recruiting process for the 2022 class. Dayton contacted Schutt in June. Among the other players it is recruiting from the 2022 class are: Fray Nguimbi, a 6-8 forward from West Oaks Academy in Orlando, Fla., who received a Dayton offer in June; and Paul McMillan IV, a 6-1 point guard from Cincinnati Woodward who received a scholarship offer from Dayton in October.

College basketball remains in a recruiting dead period, meaning coaches can’t conduct in-person recruiting. The period was extended through Sept. 30 on Wednesday.

“We’ve been doing everything pretty much through Zoom calls or Facetime and then watching guys play standpoint, a lot of film,” Dayton coach Anthony Grant said earlier this month. “A lot of live streaming and things along those guys just to see guys and get familiar with guys. That’s been quite a change, not having the summer and live period to go out and see guys and not having the opportunity to be bring guys on campus. It’s been different. You’ve had to be creative in order being able to see guys and get a feel for guys and have guys get to know you and what you have.”
