Dayton’s Grant, Team USA capture gold in FIBA Americas Championship

Dayton Flyers coach Anthony Grant won a gold medal with the United States Under-18 team Saturday night in the FIBA Americas Championship.

Grant, an assistant to Kansas head coach Bill Self, watched as the USA beat Canada 113-74 in the championship game in St. Catharines, Canada. The Americans clinched a spot in the 2019 FIBA U-19 World Cup. The top four teams qualified.

Kansas recruit Quentin Grimes, the ninth-ranked recruit in the class of 2018, led the USA with 23 points.

It was the fifth consecutive championship for the USA and the ninth overall. The tournament is held every two years. Grant also coached with the team in 2008 in Argentina. The team won the silver medal that year.

The USA beat Argentina 104-92 in the semifinals. That followed a 132-55 rout of Ecuador in the quarterfinals. The Americans were 3-0 in group play and won one game by 92 points.
