Dayton’s Josh Cunningham on preseason poll: ‘We’re better than sixth’

Dayton redshirt senior named to preseason first team in A-10

Josh Cunningham performed like a veteran, breaking into a smile but laughing for only a brief second as Dayton Flyers teammates Trey Landers, Ibi Watson and Obi Toppin tried to disrupt him as he did an interview with two TV reporters on Thursday at UD’s Cronin Center.

Earlier in the day, the Atlantic 10 named the redshirt senior forward Cunningham to the preseason first team. He’s expected to be one of the top players in the conference in the 2018-19 season, and media responsibilities are only a small part of the job. Leading Dayton back to contention is a more important task.

The Flyers, who finished ninth last season, were picked to finish sixth on Thursday.

“We know we’re better than sixth,” Cunningham said, “so we’re just going to go out there and give it our all and play our best every night.”

Dayton started practice Oct. 4 and will play another team for the first time Oct. 27 when it faces Pittsburgh in a scrimmage in Granville, Ohio. Dayton fans will see the team for the first time on Nov. 2 in an exhibition game against Capital. The season begins Nov. 7 against North Florida at UD Arena.

“We’re doing really good on the court,” Cunningham said. “Playing hard and playing defense is our main focus right now.”
