Dayton wins fifth A-10 rookie award in a row

Flyers scheduled to return to action Thursday at Rhode Island

Dayton Flyers freshmen DaRon Holmes II and Malachi Smith have combined to win the last five Atlantic 10 Conference Rookie of the Week awards.

Holmes II, a 6-foot-10 forward, won the honor for the second time Monday. He had 10 points, six rebounds, four assists and four blocked shots in Dayton’s only game last week, a 69-60 victory against Southern on Dec. 22 at UD Arena.

Smith, a 6-0 point guard, won the Rookie of the Week Award on Nov. 29, Dec. 6 and Dec. 20. Holmes II won the award for the first time on Dec. 13.

Freshman guard Primo Spears, of Duquesne, and Erik Reynolds II, a freshman guard from Saint Joseph’s, won the awards in the first two weeks of the season.
