Dayton women fall in first round of NIT

The Dayton Flyers fell behind early and couldn’t catch up in a 74-51 loss to Northwestern in the first round of the women‘s NIT on Thursday in Chicago.

Dayton finished with a 17-14 record in coach Shauna Green’s third season.

Jayla Scaife scored 24 points to lead the Flyers. She made a season-high 5-of-9 3-pointers. She scored Dayton’s first nine points on 3s.

Shakeela Fowler added nine points and three assists.

Dayton shot a season-worst 19 percent in the first half and trailed 17-6 after one quarter, 30-10 late in the second quarter and 39-17 at halftime. The Flyers did not score in the final 6:12 of the first quarter.

Lindsey Pullian scored 26 to lead the Wildcats (17-14). Northwestern shot 41.4 percent from the field to Dayton’s 27.4. The Flyers had twice as many turnovers (16-8).

Lauren Cannatelli had three points in her final game for Dayton. Araion Bradshaw scored seven.

Northwestern advanced to play Toledo in the second round at 1 p.m. Sunday in Chicago.
