Dayton’s Bogues sets school record at NCAA championships

UD sophomore is a second-team All-American

Casey Bogues made more Dayton Flyers history at the NCAA Track and Field Championships on Thursday night in Eugene, Ore.

Bogues, a sophomore from Red Bank, N.J., broke her own school record on her first throw with a distance of 53.39 meters. She set the previous record of 51.28 at the Atlantic 10 Conference championship meet on May 1. That was also an A-10 record.

The throw at Hayward Field helped Bogues, who was seeded 18th entering the meet, finish 11th in a field of 24 athletes. That’s the highest finish by a Dayton athlete at the NCAA championships.

Emily Borchers finished 24th in the steeplechase in 2019. Mallory Barnes placed 19th in the hammer throw in 2010 and 18th in 2011.

Bogues fell less than a meter short of qualifying for the finals as the top eight advanced. Georgia senior Marie Therese-Obst won the javelin with a throw of 59.69. The top four finishers were seniors. There were two freshmen in the top 11. Bogues had the top throw by a sophomore. By placing 11th, she earned a second-team All-American honor.
