Dietrich sets a record by taking one for the team for the sixth time in series vs. Brewers

According to the Reds, he’s “the first player in the modern era to get hit by a pitch six times in a series of any length.”

“Getting on base is big whether it’s a walk, hit, hit by pitch, it doesn’t matter,” said Dietrich in a quote posted by the Reds Twitter account. “When you’re on base, you’re creating chaos. The way we’re hitting now, it’s important.”

The Milwaukee Brewers hit Dietrich twice on Thursday in the series opener, three times on Friday — tying a single-game Major League record — and once on Saturday through five innings. He tripled to drive in a run in a three-run first, but the Reds trailed 6-5 through five.

Dietrich became the first Reds player to be hit by a pitch at least twice in consecutive games Thursday and Friday. He has been hit 15 times this season and leads baseball in the category. He has been hit 107 times in his seven-year career.

Prior to this series, the only player to be hit by a pitch five times in a series was Washington's Jake Stahl in a three-game series vs the Philadelphia Athletics in April 1904.
