Dutch Lions women’s team earns rest after clinching title

After clinching the Women’s Professional Soccer League Valley Conference championship on June 24 with three regular-season games remaining, the Dayton Dutch Lions FC women’s squad has a luxury afforded few teams.

“I’m now in the privileged position of being able to rest and rotate players as necessary in order to best prepare for playoffs,” coach Ian Richardson said. “I’m hoping that the July 4th break helped with recovery, and we plan to utilize the next few weeks in order to sharpen things up at training so we’re ready for the greater test ahead.”

With the division title and a berth in the regional playoffs secured, the Dutch Lions did suffer their first loss, 1-0, on July 1 as they visited the Fire & Ice Soccer Club in St. Louis with a drastically reduced lineup.

“It was my decision to take a very small squad and allow players additional time off to get healthy prior to our game this Saturday,” Richardson said.

The Lions (5-1-0) close their home season Saturday as they host the FC Pride at 5 p.m. at the DOC Stadium at West Carrollton High School. Dayton closes the regular season on the road against the Cincinnati Sirens on July 15.

The regional playoffs start July 23-24 at a site to be determined.

Honoring those who serve: The Dayton Dutch Lions doubleheader Saturday is Military Appreciation Night. Fans can take in both matches for $8, youth tickets are $5 and both active-duty and retired military personnel get in free. The women host the FC Pride at 5 p.m., followed by the men facing off against the Kokomo Mantis at 7:30.

The action, however, won’t be limited to the playing field as Team Fastrax Professional Skydiving Team will also be on hand, delivering the game ball from high above DOC Stadium. Team Fastrax — with a combined jump total of more than 300,000 skydives — competes at the highest levels, nationally and internationally. A Team Fastrax parachute demonstration skydive typically consists of a member exiting an aircraft over a large crowd, such as an airshow or major sports event, and descending to a precise landing to the delight of spectators.

Dayton Dynamo: The Dynamo (1-9-1) host the Michigan Stars in their NPSL season finale Friday at 7 p.m. at Welcome Stadium. Dayton was shut out 3-0 in its last meeting with the Stars in mid-June.

The Dynamo host the Chicago Mustangs in a friendly on Sunday at Wright State University’s Alumni Field. In addition to the $10 general admission tickets for this match, $5 lawn seats will be available.
