While the Dynamo offense closed the gap in the second half, Detroit City collected a 4-2 road win at Welcome Stadium.
Midfielder Danny Deakin sparked the Detroit City scoring onslaught with a picture-perfect free kick in the 22nd minute. Dayton goalkeeper Corey Whisenhunt got his hand on another Deakin free kick minutes later but Detroit City forward Alec Lasinski tapped in a goal off the rebound. Detroit City led 2-0 midway through the first half.
Lasinski was just warming up as he found the net again on a diving header at the 30th minute mark to go ahead 3-0. Ali Al-Gashamy added one more for the visitors before halftime – with an assist by Deakin. Detroit led 4-0 at the break.
The stats matched the deficit as Dayton had just a single shot on goal in the first half to Detroit City’s six.
The Dynamo got on the scoreboard early in the second half. Detroit City’s Sebastian Harris earned a yellow card for tripping up Dayton forward Khristian Montoya, who answered with a penalty kick in the 55th minute as the Dynamo closed the gap to 4-1.
Dayton continued to chip away at the Detroit lead as Tristan Lyle – a Wright State freshman – headed in a corner by Trae Collins. It was 4-2 Detroit in the 75th minute.
“It feels good to see a ball go into the net,” Lyle, a Beavercreek graduate, said.
While the Dayton offense was firing on all cylinders in the second half – including a near miss by midfielder Kwame Sarkodie and a 25-yard volley by Christian Johnson called back on a penalty – the Dynamo defense also turned it up a notch. Dayton held Detroit City to just two shots on goal and dominated time of possession with 64 percent in the second half.
“We made some tactical changes, but I think we were more motivated in the second half,” Lyle said. “We wanted it more.”
Still in the hunt for their first win of the young NPSL season, the Dynamo will host Fort Wayne Sport Club at 2 p.m. Sunday at Welcome Stadium.
“I hope we can build off what we did in the second half,” Lyle said.
