Fairmont standout named McDonald’s All-American

The list of McDonald’s All-Americans from the area grew by one Thursday with the addition of Madeline Westbeld.

A 6-foot-3 forward from Fairmont, Westbeld is the only Ohioan to make the 2020 squad.

She is also the first Dayton-area player to earn such an honor since her sister, Kathryn, in 2014.

Like Kathryn, the younger Westbeld is headed to Notre Dame next season.

In the meantime, she is trying to get the Firebirds back to the state championship game.

With Westbeld leading the GWOC in rebounding (11.4 per game) and third in scoring (20.0 points per game), Fairmont is 15-1 overall and 8-1 in the GWOC American. Their only loss is at Wayne, the division’s No. 1 squad as of this writing, and a rematch is set for Trent Arena on Jan. 29.

Madeline Westbeld is the seventh player from the Cox Media Group coverage area to make the girls’ McDonald’s All-America team. The first were Alison Bales of Beavercreek and Brandie Hoskins of Chaminade Julienne in 2003. They were followed by Amber Gray of Lakota West (2008), Samari Walker of CJ (2010) and Ally Mallot of Madison (2011).
