It’s a first for Miamisburg, Bellbrook girls tennis teams

Miamisburg is looking to extend a record-breaking girls high school tennis season into the postseason.

Last week the Greater Western Ohio Conference South Division champion Vikings defeated Centerville to clinch their first overall conference title in program history. That marked Miamisburg’s first girls tennis title since 2000 in the old Mid-Miami League. Miamisburg also won the GWOC South in 2006, but faded to fourth in the conference tourney.

Carley Sickinger (24-5) was awarded a No. 1 seed in singles play for this week’s Division I sectional at Centerville. Mikaela Hindenlang (23-6) and Jada Strickland (26-2) will be paired in doubles and are seeded third.

“If we play the way we are capable of playing, we could really make a run, not just this year, but for several years,” said Vikings coach Sean Ridley.

The top four placers in the D-I and D-II sectionals advance to next week’s district tournaments.

  • Bellbrook captured its Southwestern Buckeye League championship in program history by stunning perennial league champ Oakwood 3-2 last week at Thomas Cloud Park in Huber Heights.

The Golden Eagles were unbeaten in league play. It also marked the first time in program history Bellbrook had beaten Oakwood.

Key Bellbrook members are seniors Megan Bias, Megan Yates, Hannah Songer and Caroline Wong; juniors Rachel Heinz, Ali contestable and freshman Abbey Shultz. The Eagles are led by first-year head coach Emily Buerschen.

  • The Chaminade Julienne girls golf team will shoot for its sixth straight trip to the Division II state championship during Wednesday's district at Pipestone Golf Course in Miamisburg.

Among the Eagles’ wins is a Greater Catholic League Co-ed championship at Weatherwax in Middletown, led by GCL player of the year Ellie Cronin, a junior. CJ also won last week’s D-II sectional at WGC in Xenia by 24 strokes over runner-up Kenton Ridge.

The top three teams and top three individuals not on those qualifying teams will advance to next week’s state tournament at Columbus.

The girls D-I sectional is today at Kitty Hawk. Also on Wednesday are the boys D-I sectionals at Beavercreek and Reid North in Springfield. On Thursday it’s the boys D-II and D-III districts at Weatherwax.
