The Dayton Flyers were picked to finish second in the Pioneer Football League this season in a preseason vote of league coaches.

The Flyers, who have won 12 PFL titles in the 24 years of the league, totaled 92 voting points to finish behind only preseason favorite and 2016 champion San Diego (99). It’s the fourth straight year San Diego and Dayton have been picked 1-2 in the poll.

The Torreros finished 8-0 in league play last season, while Dayton was 7-1. The Flyers’ lone loss was 34-22 at San Diego. The teams meet this season Sept. 30 at Welcome Stadium.

Marist (69) was third in the voting, followed by Drake (67), Campbell (62), Jacksonville (62), Butler (49), Morehead State (42), Stetson (29), Valparaiso (24) and Davidson (10).

Dayton opens the season Sept. 2 at Robert Morris. The home opener is Sept. 9 vs. Southeast Missouri.
