The Pennsylvania native began his coaching career as an assistant at Dayton in 1973.
He went on to many stops in a career that spanned four decades, including stints as head coach at Northwestern and Stanford before moving on to the NFL with the Minnesota Vikings and Arizona Cardinals.
Green was 67.
