Golf: Centerville’s Sipe is MVGA’s player of the year

The Miami Valley Golf Association’s 2017 player of the year is Austin Sipe of Centerville.

The 23-year-old Sipe ended Jeff Scohy’s three-year run as player of the year by winning the Ohio Amateur Championship at Springfield Country Club in July and collecting 500 points.

The Ohio Am has been conducted annually since 1904 and only four other Dayton area residents have won it.

Bob Kepler, who later became the Ohio State University golf coach, won it in 1931, the amazing Bob Servis won it five times between 1933 and 1947, Brian Fogt of Vandalia won it in 1982 and Michael Bernard of Huber Heights became the youngest champion when he won it at the age of 16 in 2010.

The Ohio Am runners-up from the Miami Valley were Scotty Reston (1931), Kepler (1933), Servis (1934), Bob Roll of Greenville (1950, 1954), Jack Zimmerman (1955), Bob Benning (1958), Mike Podolski of Troy (1961), Jeff Goettman (1976), Brian Fogt (1981), Frank Lickliter (1991), Randy Leen, who occupied or shared second place in 1995, 1996 and 1998, Scohy, who was co-runner-up in 2004 and Marty Miller (2006).

In addition to his Ohio Am triumph, Sipe earned Player of the Year points by tying for fifth place and earning 85 points in the Miami Valley Metropolitan Championship won by Josh Gilkison of Springboro, who collected 200 points for the victory.

Dan Devore, who won his third straight Metropolitan Senior Championship, won his fourth Senior Player of the Year title.
