Golf: WGC in Xenia continues camp for 31st year

Thirty years. That’s how long the WGC Golf Course in Xenia has staged its Miami Valley Junior Golf Association golf camp.

Number 31 will be held June 19-22.

Camp director Jim Beaver reports that boys and girls ages 8-17 will train from 8:30 a.m.-1 p.m. They will receive daily instruction on stroke technique, golf etiquette and the rules of golf.

They will get time on the practice range and putting greens and will play each day on the WGC course.

The staff includes PGA pro Garay Goecke and co-director Roy Cassidy, the girls golf coach at Carroll High School. Others include Beavercreek High School boys coach Chris Nartker, Stebbins boys coaches Rick Pagniano and Shane Williams and Westerville North girls coach Betsy Beaver.

Deadline to sign up is June 9. More information is available at:

• The first of four Miami Valley Masters golf outings will be held Monday afternoon at Piqua Country Club. This group was formerly the Dayton Seniors. Participants must be 50 years old and over.

The Ohio Am will be played July 11-14 at Springfield Country Club.

• Leesa Mitchell-Cassell, who has been the club manager at Miami Valley Golf Club for two years, has taken the same position at Brown’s Run Country Club near Middletown.

• Moss Creek Golf Course near Clayton, which was planning to open for play a couple of days ago, has postponed its 2017 opening until Friday because of the heavy rainfall in the last few days.

• Last Monday’s rain quit just in time for the Miami Valley Golf Association to get a full field of players in its Better Ball event around the Country Club of the North golf course in the afternoon.
