Centerville grad to play in Western Amateur

Austin Sipe of Centerville is one of six Ohioans invited to play in the Western Amateur golf tournament next week at Rich Harvest Farms near Sugar Grove, Ill.

The others are: two-time Ohio Amateur champion Andrew Dorn of West Chester, 2014 Ohio Am runner-up Will Grimmer of Cincinnati, 2015 Ohio Am champion Joo-Young Lee of Hilliard, P.J. Malik of Chagrin Falls and Ben Silverman of Toledo.

The Western Amateur is one of four events sponsored by the Western Golf Association, which also operates the Evans Scholarship Foundation for caddies. The BMW Championship, the Hotel Fitness Championship and the Western Junior also are operated by the WGA.

Beau Hossler of Mission Viejo, Calif., won the Western last year.

Sipe, a 2012 Centerville High School graduate and a rising junior at Wright State University, was medalist in the 2015 Ohio Amateur sectional qualifier at Miami Valley Golf Club and tied for 35th in the Ohio Am.

He was a member of Centerville teams that advanced to the state high school tournament in Columbus four straight years and was the first-round leader in the 2013 Metropolitan Championship with a 66.

Chip shots

• Molly Skapik has qualified for the U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship for the second year in a row.

The 19-year-old from Miamisburg earned the spot in the Aug. 10-16 event at Portland (Ore.) Golf Club by tying for third in the July 16 qualifier at Walnut Grove Country Club.

Skapik is a rising sophomore at the University of Louisville.

• Steve Block, who won City Men’s Stroke Play titles in 1996, 2006 and 2008 and match play titles in 2007 and 2009, won his second straight senior match play title last week.

The 53-year-old Block defeated Steve Sandstrom in the 2015 final, 1 up in 21 holes.

The entry deadline for the City Men’s Stroke Play Championship is July 31. It will be held Aug. 6-9 at Madden Golf Course. The senior men will play 36 holes Aug. 6-7.

• Jared Jones of Muirfield Village Golf Club fired a six-under-par 66 Monday in the Southern Ohio PGA’s Blue Golf event at Walnut Grove Country Club. Joe Moore of Beavercreek Golf Club tied for third with a 70 while Doug Wade (Sugar Valley), Ben Stewart (Walnut Grove) and Pat Delaney (Urbana) tied for sixth with 71s. Delaney was runner-up to Tim Lindemann in the senior category.
