Yankee Trace re-paving cart paths

The Golf Club at Yankee Trace in Centerville is in the process of having its asphalt cart paths re-paved.

“We’re doing the Heritage Course (front nine of the original 18 holes) this year and the Legends Course (back nine) done next year,” Yankee Trace golf pro Steve Marino said. “It’s a 2-3 week project.”

Marino said the entire cart path will get a new layer of asphalt. Some sections will be widened and curbing will be added in some areas near tees and around the clubhouse and driving range.

“We’ve never re-done the cart paths,” Marino said, noting that Yankee Trace opened 18 years ago.

City Manager Greg Horn said this year’s phase of the project will cost $177,000.

Yankee Trace has a third nine that is much newer and not in need of cart path repair at this time.

Ohio Team picked for USGA event

Cathy Jefferson of Dayton will captain the Ohio team for the USGA Women’s State Team Championship at NCR Country Club Sept. 17-19.

On behalf of the Women’s Ohio State Golf Association she has selected Suzi Spotleson of Canton, Allison Schulz of Cincinnati and Shirley Vaughn of Akron as the three women who will make up the Ohio entry.

Spotleson is the only one who played two years ago, the last time the biennial tournament was held. Jefferson expected to be a non-playing captain in 2011 but wound up playing when team member Annie Miles withdrew after qualifying for the LPGA Tour. The Ohio team finished 34th.

“It was incredibly hot and humid,” Jefferson said, “but it was a great experience.”

Host Georgia won with a team that included a 14-year-old (who was medalist) and a 17-year-old in its lineup. Jefferson said Ohio high school golfers cannot compete if their teams are in season

Ohio won the competition in 2003 when it was held at the Wellesley (Mass.) Country Club. This will be the first time the tournament has been held in Ohio.
