Greg Sciano: Not time to ordain Ohio State’s defense yet

Buckeyes haven’t allowed a rushing TD this season

Greg Schiano spent 11 seasons as the head coach at Rutgers. He won five bowl games. He guided the Scarlet Knights to one of their best seasons ever in 2006 when they finished 11-2.

On Saturday, however, Schiano was on the opposite sideline as defensive coordinator of the Ohio State Buckeyes, and that was the right place to be as the No. 2 Buckeyes routed Rutgers 58-0 at Ohio Stadium. The game marked the return of former Ohio State co-defensive coordinator Chris Ash, who is now the head coach at Rutgers, to Columbus.

“I know coach Ash and I know so many people there,” Schiano said, “but the one thing that took me back was I didn’t realize they had changed back to the original helmets.”

Schiano’s group recorded its first shutout in the Big Ten since it blanked Wisconsin 59-0 in the Big Ten championship in 2014. Ohio State remains the only FBS team that hasn’t allowed a rushing touchdown.

“We’ve got a chance to be really good,” Schiano said. “We’ll see. We’re playing well and doing some things well, but as a coach, you always look at the things you’re not doing. I think we all know it’s going to get harder and harder as we go. It’s not time to ordain them yet. We’ll keep working.”

First comments: Schiano met with the media for the first time since he hit a bicyclist with his car on Sept. 22. He was cited for failing to obey a traffic-control device.

“In respect to him and the whole situation, I’m just going to say it was an awful accident and one I don’t wish on my worst enemy,” Schiano said, “but it happened. I’m glad he’s progressing, and he and his family remain in our prayers.”

Freshman impact: Ohio State's starters left the game late in the third quarter. Freshman running back Demario McCall took over for Mike Weber and rushed for 85 yards on 10 carries. He's averaging 7.2 yards per carry on 20 attempts this season.

First scores: Wide receivers Terry McLaurin, Parris Campbell and Johnnie Dixon scored touchdowns for the first time in their careers.

Standout stat: Ohio State rushed for 410 yards, passing 400 yards on the ground for the first time since Nov. 16, 2013, against Illinois (441).

Next game: Ohio State plays Indiana at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at Ohio Stadium. The Hoosiers (2-1) played their Big Ten opener at home against Michigan State on Saturday night.

Indiana opened the season with a 34-13 victory at Florida International. It beat Ball State 30-20 in its second game and lost 33-28 at home to Wake Forest last week.
