Final week for high school football scrimmages

This is the final week for varsity football scrimmages and two great matchups are scheduled for Thursday.

Centerville is at Trotwood-Madison in a 7 p.m. jamboree game. That’s a major preseason fund-raiser for host Trotwood and enables each participant a third scrimmage. The $250 participation fee goes to the Ohio High School Athletic Association’s Catastrophic Insurance Fund. All member schools must pay that fee; lumping it into a jamboree game benefits in an extra football scrimmage.

According to the OHSAA, football jamboree games have annually generated more than $70,000 to its CIF since they began in 2009. Tickets cost $5 for adults and $4 for students and senior citizens.

Centerville and Trotwood are two of 10 remaining Greater Western Ohio Conference teams and will not play in the regular season.

Among Thursday’s other football scrimmage matchups is Marion Local and Spencerville at Fort Loramie at 6 p.m. Marion Local (13-2) lost to Kirtland in the Division VI state championship last season and opened the playoffs by defeating Spencerville (8-3). Loramie (12-2) lost to McComb in a D-VII state semifinal, the deepest the Redskins have ever advanced in the postseason.

Many teams will hold their final football scrimmage on Friday. That includes Springfield (9-3) hosting Cincinnati Archbishop Moeller (6-5) at 7 p.m. (not a jamboree matchup). All of Springfield’s regular-season home games will be at the high school on East Home Road. The press box at Springfield’s Evans Stadium was hit with major water damage during the Memorial Day tornado outbreak and will not be ready for this season.

The football regular season for most area teams starts on Friday, Aug. 30.
