High school football preview: Jefferson

The following is a brief high school football preseason preview.

High school: Jefferson Broncos

Division / region: D-VII, Region 26

League/conference: Independent

Head coach: Chris Roark, first year with the Broncos; previously was the head coach of the Alter Knights for six seasons and another four seasons as head of the Fenwick Falcons.

Assistant coaches: Aaron Buczkowski, Jason Carr, Alonzo Henderson, Chris Respiss, Matt Shawver and Tony White.

2013 record: 4-6

2013 highlights / notable achievements: Dug a quick hole with a 0-3 start, but finished strong. Allowed a total of 16 combined points in defeats of Green (38-0), Sciotoville Community (26-8), Riverview East Academy (24-8) and Belmont (24-0). A major schedule makeover. Fairfield Christian Aca., Green, Sciotoville, Lehman Catholic, Riverview and Meadowdale have been dropped. Aiken, Cin. Country Day, Toledo Scott, Western Brown, Troy Christian and Columbus East have been added. As an independent, Jefferson managed to secure eight home games. But that also means the Broncos will be a traveling road show if many of those games require return trips next season.

Key returners:

Mike Upshaw

Lee Phipps

Jeff Gaddy

Daviawne Wilson Jones

Coach's comments: I am excited to be a part of the Bronco football tradition in Jefferson Township. Make no doubt about it; the team is excited and eager to compete. I work with a great group of young men. The assistant coaches and I believe this group will win ball games. Moreover, we see a great group of young men who have the ability to achieve off the field in terms of academics and service to their community. I continue to be impressed by their heart and dedication.
