Fairmont 15-year-old rolls an 822 series

KETTERING — It wasn’t the answer bowling coach Rex Wolfe was expecting.

“I work with a couple hundred kids of all ages and I always tell them they need to have a goal, and it was no different with my son,” Wolfe said. “He was just a kid at the time and I was working with him, trying to get his arm swing going, when I asked him about his bowling goal.”

Ryan told his dad/coach that he wanted him to buy an RV so his dad could follow him around when he was on the pro tour. The young bowler was only 7 at the time.

“It’s all he has ever wanted to do,” Wolfe said of his son. “I’ve had to push him to do other things so he wouldn’t focus all his energy on bowling.”

That determination has brought Ryan Wolfe much bowling success — most recently an 800 series. Ryan, now 15, rolled a 300-257-265 – 822 on Sept. 19 in the Saturday morning youth league at Poelking Woodman Lanes. It was his second perfect game and first 800 series.

“I wasn’t even thinking an 800 was possible until the middle of the third game when everyone started crowding around me,” Ryan said. “I was definitely a little nervous, but the next thing I knew, everyone was yelling and clapping. It was great.”

The Fairmont sophomore’s next big goal is not an individual one. After the Firebirds finished second to Kenton Ridge at the state bowling tournament, Ryan, the sole freshman on the varsity squad last season, is more determined than ever to make another run for the boys state title.

Wolfe isn’t the only Firebird bowler who has had success on the lanes of late as fellow sophomore Zach Grubb shot his first 300 game on Sept. 12.

“We’re going to be young but we will have a good team, capable of winning the whole thing,” Wolfe said.

Beyond high school, the sophomore is already looking at collegiate programs, especially Fresno State. If he heads to California, his dad might want to start shopping for RVs.
