Grand reopening for Miamisburg’s Harmon Field

Thursday night, Aug. 27, was big in Miamisburg as the community got its first look at renovated Harmon Field during a pep rally that kicked off the Vikings’ fall sports season.

Tonight will be even bigger as the Vikings host Bellbrook in the high school football season opener for both teams.

Nearly destroyed by last year’s windstorm (Sept. 14, 2008), Harmon Field — built in the 1920s and changed to its current north-south orientation when permanent grandstands were constructed in the 1930s — needed to be remodeled, refurbished and rebuilt.

“It’s nice for the kids to see the community’s behind us and to see the pride in getting Harmon Field on par with the other stadiums in the GWOC,” Miamisburg coach Zack Cline said.

Ranked No. 1

Fans attending tonight’s Skyline Chili Crosstown Showdown get to witness the top-ranked prep senior in Ohio.

He’s Lakota West linebacker Jordan Hicks. The 6-foot-2, 200-pound bullet is No. 1 on the Ohio High Magazine Top 150 list.

Hicks has yet to commit to a college, but here are the schools that have offered scholarships: Ohio State, Southern Cal, Alabama, Cincinnati, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, LSU, Miami of Florida, Stanford, Texas and Virginia.

Mr. Versatility

Springboro coach Ryan Wilhite originally saw Taylor Franz as a blocking fullback.

But the versatile senior, who was elected captain in the offseason, had other ideas. No way was he going to be pigeonholed as a one-position player. Franz blossomed into the Panthers’ multi-dimensional H-back.

“He catches the ball out of the backfield; carries the ball; and he’s also very physical in his blocking,” Wilhite said. “He looks like a tight end. He looks like a tailback. He looks like a fullback. He does all those things.”

Ram tough

From quarterback Marcus Graham to wide receiver A.J. Jordan to free safety Bam Bradley to tight end Justin Favors, Trotwood’s roster is loaded with future major-college talent.

But coach Maurice Douglass won’t let the Rams get big heads. His key to success?

“Our ability to walk in humility while achieving success,” he said.
