Mason girls soccer defeats Centerville in D-I semis

Centerville High School lost to Mason 2-0 in a girls soccer regional semifinal at Bellbrook on Thursday.

Mason scored twice in the first half, the first off a goal by Sammy Rutkowski taking a pass across the center of the field. Mason added a penalty kick with three minutes remaining after Centerville was called for tripping.

The Elks were dealt a blow early when goalkeeper Abbey Collins suffered a shoulder injury. She was taken to a hospital and backup Carolyn Emsley stepped in.

“(Emsley) did a fantastic job, being thrown into that situation,” Centerville coach Don Skelton said. “She wasn’t even planning to play.”

Centerville (17-3) defeated Mason in the district tournament last year en route to a berth in the state semifinals. The Elks have made the regional tournament for six consecutive seasons.

“We’re always disappointed not to go further,” Skelton said. “They kids just come to play hard. We’ve had a nice run, no doubt about it.”
