“This cause is so important to us because we’re all women,” said Middletown junior varsity coach Tiffany Fordyce, who is organizing the event. “One out of eight women will get breast cancer in her lifetime. We have rallied around the idea of the greater good and we’re working to better the current research so maybe down the line, one of us will be more fortunate.”
The Middies are hoping to pack the stands with pink. Members of the volleyball team are selling event T-shirts at school (during lunch) on Monday and Tuesday for $5 (up to XL) and $7 (2XL and up). Shirts also will be available at Monday’s home match. Fans wearing Volley For the Cure T-shirts will be admitted to Tuesday’s match for free.
Fordyce said breast cancer survivors will be recognized during the match. There also will be raffle prizes, a bake sale and a fan serving contest, she said.
Fordyce said the Middies are well on their way to reaching their goal of $1,500 raised. Athletic Director Gary Lebo said T-shirt sales were going so well that he recently had to order another shipment of 150.
“The girls have just done such a great job with this,” Lebo said of the players.
The event begins at 4:30 p.m. with the freshman match, followed by JV at 5:45 p.m. and varsity at 7 p.m.
Madison (Wednesday, Sept. 30 vs. Waynesville), Edgewood (Oct. 6 vs. Talawanda) and Franklin (Oct. 6 vs. Milton-Union) also will host Volley for the Cure events.
Fenwick took part in a Volley for the Cure game last week at Badin.
