“It hurts to lose like that, especially in overtime,” said a spent Travis Trice II, Wayne’s super senior.
Trice was doubled up with cramps throughout much of his body while lamenting his final game for the Warriors (22-2). That’s because he poured in a game-high 38 points on a variety of shots, spins and undefendable moves in a show that drew aahs even from Winton Woods players.
“He’s the real deal; that’s props,” said Dennis Thomas, who led Winton Woods with 25 points.
“He hit me with a move on the baseline and I had to stop, like, whoa, whoa.”
Wayne seemingly had control when Markus Crider’s dunk bumped its second-OT lead to 72-68. But Winton Woods benefitted from several Wayne turnovers and hit 8-of-9 free throws to close with a game-winning 12-4 run.
“I think that we were one of the best teams in the state ... but we didn’t get it done,” Wayne coach Travis Trice said. “That’s the bottom line.”
The rugged contest turned into a foul-fest, with Wayne’s Trice, Justin Hollins and Keith Clements all fouling out. Winton Woods (20-3) converted 35-of-43 free throws, and Wayne made 20-of-28.
Close throughout, the score was tied 10 times, and the lead changed 15 times.
“Obviously, we were fortunate to come out on top,” said Winton Woods coach Dennis Gillespie.
