White leads Springboro over Lebanon

Pitcher allows just two hits while striking out 13 as the Panthers clinch GWOC South title.

LEBANON — Scott White was hoping the weekend rain wouldn’t push back Monday’s scheduled Greater Western Ohio Conference baseball showdown between Springboro and Lebanon.

“I was geared up for this,” White said. “I would have been mad if it got pushed back to Thursday because of the rain. I just had a feeling that it was going to be a good day.”

Springboro clinched the GWOC South championship with a 4-0 win at Lebanon on Monday, May 3. The Panthers rode White’s right arm to the win.

The Springboro senior dominated the Warriors, allowing just two hits and striking out 13. He didn’t get to three balls on a single count and didn’t allow a runner past second base.

“My stuff was working,” White said. “I was throwing my fastball hard enough and my slider had a lot of movement. I was able to get ahead of hitters and my location was as good as it’s been all season.

“This was one of the greatest wins of my career.” White improved to 6-1 on the season, 17-1 as a Panther.

Lebanon’s Dusty Isaacs matched White pitch-for-pitch except for one mistake in the fourth inning. That was a two-run home run blasted by Ian Huss, scoring Ben Schubert who reached on a single off Isaacs’ glove.

Isaacs struck out 13 and gave up only three hits.

“I left one fastball up a little bit,” Isaacs said. “I wanted it away but left it up. Ian squared it up pretty well and hit it the other way.

“Hats off to Scott White. I knew I was going to have to pitch a great game but he topped me. Congratulations to him.”

Springboro tacked on two unearned runs in the sixth, but White already had enough of an advantage.

“Scott was spectacular today,” Springboro coach Mark Pelfrey said. “When he’s getting ahead of hitters and his curve ball is breaking, that’s when he’s at his best.

“It was a pitcher’s battle all game long. Fortunately, our guy was just a little bit better today.”

Springboro improved to 18-5 with the win, 11-1 in GWOC South play. Lebanon fell to 16-5, 9-3.

“Springboro is the No. 1 seed in Dayton, I voted them that way as well, and they proved they are deserving of that today,” Lebanon coach Lee Day said. “It was a well-pitched game by two of the best pitchers in the Dayton area.

“When you only get two singles, it’s hard to win ball games, and that’s what it amounted to for us today.”
