Kenton Ridge rallies in fourth quarter to beat Urbana

Lemen's 5-yard touchdown pass to Good with 5 minutes, 46 seconds left in the fourth quarter proved to be the game-winning score for Kenton Ridge in a 24-20 victory over Urbana at Richard L. Phillips Field.

"That was a very full-of-adrenaline play," Lemen said. "It was very exciting. It was on the goal line. I knew we had to get that play. Coach said, 'Just read it. Be an athlete. And make something happen.' I had a guy get open on the back side. I just turned my shoulders and got it to him. It was a really good play."

Lemen twice rallied the Cougars from deficits earlier in the game with long touchdown passes to Calvin Dibert. A 55-yard touchdown pass tied the game at 7-7 in the second quarter. Then a 43-yard touchdown pass gave Kenton Ridge a 17-14 lead with seven minutes to play in the third quarter.

The final touchdown pass wasn't as long, but it was just as impressive. It came on 3rd-and-goal.

"It's a designed run, but if we have a guy come to me, I throw it," Lemen said. "If they drop back, I run it. They kind of slow played it and shifted over. It was perfect."

The Cougars improved to 3-1. They have won three straight games since losing 54-14 to Mechanicsburg in the season opener.

This was Kenton Ridge's third victory over Urbana in as many years, following a 15-12 victory in 2016 and a 40-20 victory in 2017.

The Hillclimbers (1-3) lost two fumbles in the third quarter and then another fumble on the kickoff after Kenton Ridge scored the go-ahead touchdown. However, they stopped Kenton Ridge on fourth down late in the fourth quarter and got one more chance to take the lead.

Urbana drove to the Kenton Ridge 16-yard line and appeared to score the go-ahead touchdown in the final minute only to have it called off because of an illegal procedure penalty. Kenton Ridge then sealed the victory by breaking up a 4th-and-19 pass.

"We had to fight through a little adversity," Marratta said. "We went with Kaelan (Lemen) tonight at the running back position, and then he went down (knee), and that limited some of the things we can do. The other kids know the plays and stuff. Our game plan kind of shifted with that injury. We made do with what we have and stayed the course and got the W."

In the first half, Urbana took a 7-0 lead on a 1-yard touchdown run by Nic Dorsey with 11:31 left in the second quarter. The Cougars tied the game moments later on Dibert's first touchdown catch.

Urbana regained the lead on a 2-yard touchdown run by Preston Shields with 6:53 left in the second quarter. Garrett Kelly’s 24-yard field goal cut Urbana’s lead to 14-10 with 2:05 left in the half.

In the third quarter, Kenton Ridge took a 17-14 lead on Dibert's second touchdown catch. Urbana moved back in front, 20-17, on a 33-yard run by Shields in the third.
