Little League: The road ahead for Hamilton West Side’s all-stars

The journey continues for Hamilton West Side’s 12-year-old baseball team.

The local all-stars are practicing daily for the Ohio Little League Tournament in North Canton, opening against Galion at 1 p.m. on Saturday at the Hoover Community Recreation Complex.

West Side, the District 9 champion for the last 34 years, has won eight of the last nine and 10 of the last 12 state championships at this level.

Ten of the 11 district winners have been decided. The district champions include Jefferson (1), Boardman (2), Tallmadge (3), Mount Vernon (5), New Albany (6), Galion (7), Washington Court House (8), Kenton (10) and Ironton (11). Dover and Berlin East Holmes are playing for the District 4 crown Tuesday night.

The Ohio winner will advance to the Great Lakes Regional at the Grand Park Sports Campus in Westfield, Ind. The regional will run from Aug. 5-11, and Ohio’s first game will be at 1 p.m. on Aug. 6 against Indiana or Kentucky.

The Little League World Series is set for Aug. 16-26 in South Williamsport, Pa.
