Madison grad leads OCU to title game

Shelby Roe and her Ohio Christian University basketball teammates came up three points short of a national championship last month when they played Kentucky Christian in the National Christian College Athletic Association Division II title game in Philadelphia.

Roe, a Madison High School graduate and freshman at OCU, hit a 3-pointer with 9.9 seconds to put her team ahead by one. But the Trailblazers ended up losing a heartbreaker 72-70 to finish as the national runners-up.

Roe led all scorers in the game with 20 points. Her team finished the season with a 26-6 record, the most wins in program history.

Roe averaged 13.1 points per game, which ranked her 28th nationally. She also was 13th nationally in shooting percentage (43.6) and fourth in 3-point shooting (38.7). She also set a new school record with 64 3-pointers made.

Roe was selected to the Ohio Collegiate Athletic Conference first team and named freshman of the year. She also was named to the Mideast Region first team.

Softball

Tamara Davis (Monroe) leads her Indiana Wesleyan University team in several offensive categories.

The sophomore outfielder is the team’s top hitter with a batting average of .387. She also leads the team in hits (41), triples (3) and RBIs (21).

Women’s track

Cassie Mattia (Fenwick) was the only University of Rio Grande athlete to score points in the 15-team Miami Open on Saturday, April 10, in Oxford.

Mattia placed fifth in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:05.73.

Baseball

Zach Hurley (Springboro) leads the Ohio State Buckeyes in numerous offensive categories.

The senior has team highs in runs scored (30), hits (48) and doubles (13). He’s tied for the lead in stolen bases (4) and triples (2), and he ranks second in home runs (5) and third in batting average (.387).
