Hitting the first tee shot in a big tournament wasn’t new to him, either. Fogt was the first player to tee off in the 1982 U.S. Open at Pebble Beach.
A Miami University graduate, Fogt was inducted in the Dayton Amateur Golf Hall of Fame last year.
Springfield sectional has 39 Entries
Springfield Country Club, which is hosting a U.S. Open Sectional qualifier for the fifth time in six years, will have 27 pros and 12 amateurs competing in the 36-hole event on June 3. The number of qualifying spots has not been set.
Alec Tahy, who advanced through the U.S. Open local qualifier in Cincinnati on May 13, has been assigned to play in the sectional in Columbus at Brookside Country Club and The Lakes Golf & Country Club. He’ll be playing in a field that includes many PGA Tour pros fresh from the Memorial Tournament.
A recent Alter High School graduate, Tahy posted an even-par 71 in the local qualifier at Maketewah Country Club.
Pulos college career comes to an end
Allie Pulos graduated last Sunday from Otterbein University where she was co-captain of a golf team that won the Ohio Athletic Conference championship by 50 strokes. She was named all-conference first team.
The Otterbein women finished 16th in the NCAA Division III women’s championship May 14-17 at Destin, Fla. Their coach was Chad Bucci, former assistant pro at NCR Country Club.
Pulos, a 2009 Northmont High School graduate, spent last summer working as an intern at the Hank Haney International Junior Golf Academy in Hilton Head, S.C. She is hoping to obtain a job in the golf industry.
Beavercreek planning memorial for Schwab
Beacause the late Diana Schwab lived near the golf course and spent much of her time there in recent years, the Beavercreek Golf Club is planning to install a memorial to Schwab, who died in a traffic accident on May 8.
“We’re looking at doing a tree and a bench or something like that,” said general manager Steve Klick. “It will depend on how much money is contributed.”

Women’s event June 1 at Madden
The Madden Women’s Golf Association, which is celebrating the 30th anniversary of its formation, will hold its 27th annual scholarship tournament June 1 at Madden Golf Course. It’s a four-woman 18-hole scramble with an 8 a.m. shotgun start. The entry fee is $90 per player.
