Dayton improves to 2-0 with rout of Coppin State

Toppin, Mikesell combine for 37 points

Obi Toppin scored 19 points, and Ryan Mikesell added 18 as the Dayton Flyers routed Coppin State 76-46 on Saturday at UD Arena, improving to 2-0.

Dayton controlled the game against one of the lowest-ranked teams in Division I from start to finish. The Flyers shot 49 percent from the field and held Coppin State (0-2) to 30 percent. Coppin State had 21 turnovers. Dayton had 11.

Jordan Davis had 13 points for Dayton. Jalen Crutcher scored nine. Trey Landers scored seven. Dwayne Cohill had six points. Jhery Matos scored four.

Mikesell led the Flyers with 10 rebounds. Crutcher had seven assists.

Dayton played the last two minutes with four walk-ons in the game. Only freshman Frankie Policelli didn’t see any action.

Dayton returns to action at 7 p.m. Friday against Purdue Fort Wayne.

HALFTIME RECAP:

Crutcher hit a floater at the buzzer to give the Flyers a 41-18 halftime lead over Coppin State on Saturday at UD Arena.

Crutcher scored seven points in the half. Mikesell led the Flyers with 11 points on 4-of-6 shooting and added a team-high seven rebounds.

Toppin scored 9 points on 3-of-4 shooting. Jordan Davis scored 8.  Landers, Matos and Cohill, the other three players to see action, each had two points.

Coppin State committed 14 turnovers to Dayton’s 10. Coppin State shot 28 percent from the field and 18.2 percent from 3-point range (2 of 11). Dayton shot 50 percent from the field and 27.3 percent from 3-point range (3 of 11).

Dayton played its second straight game without redshirt senior forward Josh Cunningham, who suffered a hand injury in practice Tuesday. He sat on the bench with a brace on his hand. He was not in uniform.
