Patrick Gleason Memorial golf tourney aids family, honors friend

A good idea keeps growing every year. That’s the case with the Patrick Gleason Memorial Golf Tournament planned for Oct. 2 at Heatherwoode.

Gleason, who died on Jan. 22, 2005, was known for his great stories, friendly smile and volunteer work for the Cub Scouts. He left behind his wife, Becky, and two sons, Sean and Drew.

“We have steadily increased the number of participants in this since our first annual outing in 2005 when we had just the immediate family and friends get together for a day of golf to remember our good friend, husband, father, scout leader and role model ... Patrick T. Gleason,” said Mario Mosesso, Gleason’s best friend for 15 years.

In addition to honoring his memory, the golf tournament helps the family in a practical way. Proceeds from the annual outing go to the Sean and Drew Gleason college fund. From a total of 36 people at the first outing to a high of 120 participants last year, it’s been a fun and successful endeavor. Net proceeds of $6,500 were raised last year, bringing the total to $16,000 for their college trust fund. The boys are now 16 and 14.

According to Mosesso, they hope to meet or exceed last year’s 120 participants and net another $6,000 or more to take them to the $22,000-plus mark.

The Friday, Oct. 2 event at Heatherwoode is open to anyone who wishes to participate. Check-in time for the scramble is between 11:30 a.m. and 12:45 p.m.; tee time is 1 p.m. Tournament play will be a 4-man captain’s choice. The cost is $75 per player; that includes 18-hole greens fees, cart fees, range balls, tournament prizes, and dinner at Benham’s Grove in Centerville. The cost is $15 for dinner only ($10 for children 12-3; free for children younger than 3). Anyone who registers by Aug. 31 receives a free gift.

The cost to sponsor a hole is $75. Donations of $50 or more will be mentioned in the program. Checks should be made payable to the Patrick T. Gleason Memorial and sent to 10825 Waterbury Ridge Lane, Centerville, 45458. To obtain a registration form for the tournament, contact Mosesso at (937) 885-0699, or e-mail him at MM130542@ncr.com.

“This scramble has been well received by the community and has been growing since its inception,” said Mosesso.

“We are grateful to everyone for their continued support, and we will continue to bring you this exciting outing annually in memory of our dear friend Patrick.”
