History appears to be repeating itself as the Cincinnati Bengals prepare to head to Ralph Wilson Stadium to take on the Buffalo Bills.
Two years ago the Bengals were coming off a huge win against one of the elite teams in the NFL, the New England Patriots, when they made a Week 6 visit to Buffalo to face a Bills team that had just lost starting quarterback E.J. Manuel to a knee injury on a scramble play the week before.
Another Week 6 game is set for Sunday with Cincinnati coming off another big win, this time against the two-time defending NFC champion Seattle Sehawks, and it appears the Bengals will once again be facing Buffalo’s backup quarterback — Manuel.
Bills starter Tyrod Taylor suffered a knee injury on a scramble play in the fourth quarter of Sunday’s 14-13 win at Tennessee and is likely to miss the next few games.
But don’t expect the Bengals to overlook the Bills after what happened in 2013, when unheralded Thaddeus Lewis nearly led Buffalo to the upset in the second start of his NFL career. Lewis threw for two touchdowns and ran for another to force overtime, where Cincinnati kicker Mike Nugent booted a game-winning 43-yard field goal.
Tuesday was the two-year anniversary of that game.
The Bills, who rank 24th in the league in total offense and tied for 27th in passing offense with Taylor at the helm, will turn to Manuel, who has a career passer rating of 78.5 in 14 starts, the most recent of which came in Week 4 last year.
But defense has always been the calling card for a team coached by Rex Ryan, who is in his first season in Buffalo. The Bills have the third-best run defense in the league, allowing 82.2 yards per game, and they are plus-4 in turnover ratio.

AFC North outlook
Baltimore (1-4): at San Francisco (1-4) Sunday: It was 32 months ago these teams were battling for a Super Bowl championship. Now they're simply fighting to avoid falling into a 1-5 abyss.
Cleveland (2-3): vs. Denver (5-0) Sunday: As if recent history hasn't been torture enough for Browns fans, a visit from the Broncos is sure to conjure up memories of The Drive. That John Elway-led victory in the 1986 AFC Championship game was one of Denver's 21 victories against Cleveland in the last 23 meetings.
Pittsburgh (3-2): vs. Arizona (4-1) Sunday: Another Super Bowl rematch, this will be a pivotal swing game for the Steelers as they try to stay in the race.
